“…In Thessaloniki, one of the oldest Hebrew printers in Europe is known to have operated, which printed Jewish religious books in Spanish as early as 1512. Two centuries later, in 1727, the first Bulgarian one was established, and in 1850, the first Greek one. In any event, in the broader region of northern Greece, very early on, a good many Greek printers were in operation: in 1627, 1757 and 1789 in Constantinople; in 1731 in Moschopoli in Northern Epirus (for a fairly long time); in 1759 on Mount Athos and in 1838 in Meleniko, which was then Greek. But apart from the first Greek printers that operated in Macedonian regions, it is worth remembering that the two earliest Greek printers, who lived in Vienna, were the brothers Markidai Pouliou…”.
